The slap echoed through the ballroom before the music even stopped.
The bride’s head turned from the force of it.
Three red marks showed up on her cheek while every guest just stared in silence.
The older woman in the silver gown leaned in close, her diamonds shaking against her throat.
“A girl like you doesn’t deserve to stand among people like us.”
The groom froze next to his father.
No one moved.
No one said a word to defend her.
The bride slowly touched her cheek.
Her eyes filled up with tears, but she didn’t let a single one fall.
Instead, she pulled out her phone and called one number.
Her voice was quiet.
“Yes. Do it now.”
The older woman laughed nervously.
“What did you just do?”
The bride looked at the groom first, then at his father.
Her voice stayed calm, but her hand was shaking.
“You should have asked that before she touched what belonged to my family.”
The older man’s face changed.
The bride lifted her eyes.
“You want to know who I am?”
The ballroom doors suddenly opened behind her.
And she whispered, “You’re about to find out.”
Everyone turned toward the doors.
